Centered around the theme, Conexiones, Jane Addams Children’s Book Award Winning Books were on display by Publishers Spotlight!  The Addams Peace Association would like to thank everyone including our incredible hosts, presenters, authors, illustrators, and special guests that attended this year’s conference. You all truly made this event special and worthwhile.

Letter from the Executive Director

I am proud to share that as we close out 2023, we served over 1,000 students in Kindergarten through 8th grade in the Bronx, New York; Stamford, Connecticut; Los Angeles, California; Chicago, Illinois; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

We celebrated our 70th Anniversary in Chicago Public Library’s Harold Washington Center this past April, in partnership with The Chicago Public Library’s 150th Anniversary; showcasing artwork from the young scholars at Bouchet International School, with whom we have worked for the past three years.  We forged new partnerships and strengthened others to continue to serve as many schools, libraries, and students as possible.  We worked with four award-winning authors and look forward to working with more in the year to come. We finalized a new three-year strategic plan and bid farewell to six dedicated board members.  We welcomed six new board members in October 2023 expanding our commitment to diversity and inclusion.  We partnered with Publisher’s Spotlight to expand our presence at several conferences such as the American Library Association, National Council of Teachers of English and National Council of Social Studies.

It has been an eventful and successful year on many fronts, but the most inspiring and rewarding has been our work with schools and libraries, and seeing the students light up as they meet–for many of them–their first author or illustrator.  Our social justice “Learn and Do” reading guides coupled with author visits and book donations allowed for thoughtful, inspiring conversation, discussing historical figures such as Ida B. Wells and Mamie Till-Mobley, and their fight for civil rights and women’s rights, as well as the immigrant struggle for human rights in Land of the Cranes.

We hope you will consider supporting our mission with a donation, that with the help of our award-winning books, we can continue “deepening understanding of peace and justice for children and their adults through reflection, dialogue and social action.”

Happy holidays!

 Gratefully,

Angela Medina
